Charlotte Chefs Crowned Winners at NCRLA North Carolina Chef Showdown

The second annual North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association (NCRLA) North Carolina Chef Showdown was held on August 21 in Raleigh, and Charlotte did not fail to represent! Sixteen chefs from across North Carolina competed for the titles of NCRLA’s Chef of the Year, Pastry Chef of the Year and Mixologist of the Year.  The top winners were all from restaurants right here in the Queen City: Matthew Krenz of The Asbury at the Dunhill Hotel won Chef of the Year, Ann Marie Stefany of Heirloom won Pastry Chef of the Year and Amanda Britton of 204 North Kitchen & Cocktails took home the award for Mixologist of the Year. The judges, a panel of industry professionals, based their decision on the presentation and taste of the dish as well as the best use and number of NC ingredients on each plate.

Midwood Smokehouse BBQ & Bourbon Series Kicking Off

The first of three in a series of whiskey classes at Midwood Smokehouse’s Park Road location (540-C Brandywine Road) will be held on Wednesday, August 30. Three bourbons will be paired with BBQ bites for $35 per person. Make sure to note the flavor of that BBQ you eat...it’s coming at you from the spot’s new all wood smoker. Want to attend all three classes? The cost is $85. Call and save your seat at 980-237-7929.

Ramen Soul

Chef Tim Groody of Fork! in Cornelius has recently opened Ramen Soul on the way north side, in Mooresville. Think ramen (seven kinds to choose from) and Chinese-style small plates (dim sum) - a huge departure from his menu at Fork!. Groody is known as one of Charlotte’s farm-to-fork pioneers so expect menu items at both of his restaurants to continue to feature local ingredients and local farmers.
